The Supremacy Of Christ

Sermon – February 22nd 2026

Colossians is one of Paul’s prison epistles (written alongside Ephesians, Philippians, and Philemon while he was imprisoned in Rome). Although Paul never visited Colossae, the church there was likely founded by Epaphras, who heard the gospel from Paul in Ephesus and carried it to his hometown. This highlights a key truth: churches are planted when the gospel is preached, heard, and believed.

The book of Colossians is structured in four chapters:

Theology (Chapter 1) – Who Christ is.

Problem (Chapter 2) – False teachings threatening the church.

Practice (Chapter 3) – The solution: living a Christ-centered life.

Personal instructions (Chapter 4) – Encouragements and commendations.

Colossians 1:15–20, often called the “Christ hymn,” which presents three major truths about Christ’s supremacy:

1. Christ and Creation

Jesus is the image of the invisible God. He is not part of creation but supreme over it. All things were created through Him and for Him. In Christ, God is fully revealed, removing confusion about who God is.

2. Christ and the Church

Christ is the head of the church, His new creation. Through His death and resurrection, He rescues people from sin and the power of Satan. As head, He governs, directs, and sustains the church. Without the head, the body has no purpose; thus, Christ alone leads His church.

3. Christ and the New Creation (Reconciliation)

Through Christ, God reconciles not only humanity but all things—both in heaven and on earth. The goal of this reconciliation is that believers may be presented before God holy, blameless, and irreproachable. Christ restores harmony between God and creation.

Jesus is supreme Lord and God. Paul prays that believers grow in the knowledge of God and live Christ-centered lives. The more we understand who Christ is, the more faithfully we can follow Him. The call is to cling to Christ and live as sincere followers of Lord Jesus. God bless!
