What does it mean to be the church? Jesus builds not simply a gathering of people, but a forgiving community—people who have received forgiveness from Christ and learn to forgive one another.

Drawing from Matthew 18:15–20, this sermon explores three important practices of a Christ-centred community: confront lovingly, forgive endlessly, and reconcile intentionally.

When someone sins against us, Jesus calls us to confront lovingly. The goal is not to win an argument or make someone feel guilty, but to restore the person and the relationship. This means learning to speak “the truth in love.”

Jesus also calls us to forgive endlessly. Forgiveness means refusing to keep the debt alive, allowing bitterness to grow, or remaining trapped in the cycle of hurt. Because Christ has forgiven us at great cost, we are called to develop hearts that continually forgive.

Finally, we are called to reconcile intentionally. Forgiveness opens the door to reconciliation and restored relationships. When we gather in Jesus’ name, receive forgiveness, offer forgiveness, and seek reconciliation, we become the community in which Christ is present among us.

Are we a community that keeps wounds alive, or one that forgives, restores, and reconciles? May the Lord make us a truly forgiving and reconciled community.
