Follow me

Sermon – January 25th 2026

Follow Me: Matthew presents Jesus as the promised Messiah—the one in whom the Old Testament prophecies fulfilled. With over sixty references to the Old Testament, Matthew shows that the light foretold by Isaiah has now dawned. In Galilee, a region once marked by invasion, exile, and deep darkness, Jesus begins his ministry at Capernaum, bringing good news through preaching, teaching, and healing. The prophecy spoken eight hundred years earlier—“the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light”—is fulfilled in him.

Jesus proclaims that the kingdom of heaven has come near and invites people to repent. He comes not as a threat or an intimidating figure, but as one among the people—gentle, humble, and welcoming. His call is simple and gracious: “Come and see,” “Follow me.” With open arms, he invites the weary and burdened to find rest in him.

Ordinary fishermen—Simon, Andrew, James, and John—respond to this invitation. Though unqualified and uncertain about the future, they leave everything to follow Jesus and are transformed into extraordinary witnesses, becoming the foundation of the Church, with Christ as the cornerstone.

Following Jesus involves risk and commitment. Discipleship cannot be distant, casual, or passive. Jesus must be followed closely, with intentional commitment and discipline. Christians are urged not to follow preachers, denominations, or human leaders, but Jesus alone—the one who was crucified and raised for us. The call of Epiphany is clear: to see the light, respond to the invitation, and follow Christ sincerely and closely. God bless us all!
