Jesus is the Lamb of God

Sermon – January 18th, 2026

Behold the Lamb of God!
John the Baptist points his disciples to Jesus with the profound declaration, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” This title draws deeply from the Old Testament imagery of the lamb. In the Exodus, the blood of the lamb saved Israel from death and delivered them from slavery. In temple worship, the daily sacrifice of lambs formed the foundation of Israel’s relationship with God, where forgiveness was sought and God met his people. The prophet Isaiah also speaks of the suffering servant who was led like a lamb to the slaughter.

After baptising Jesus, John recognises that all these meanings are fulfilled in him. Jesus is the true Lamb of God, whose sacrifice on the cross becomes the foundation of New Testament worship. In our church worship, we worship the Lamb of God, we take part in him by receiving the Holy Communion, and we receive mercy, peace, and share peace with others.

Hearing John’s testimony, two of his disciples begin to follow Jesus. John willingly lets them go, for his calling is to lead others to Christ. When they ask Jesus where he is staying, his simple invitation is, “Come and see.” It is an open, gentle call to all—an invitation to encounter the Lamb of God, to worship him, and to follow him. In him, we find life. May the Lord help us to know him more and more! God bless!
