Sermon – July 13th , 2025
The common interpretation of the Good Samaritan as simply a call to do good deeds. Instead, it centers on three crucial questions in the passage:
1. What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
The teacher’s question reflects a works-based mindset. But Jesus shifts the focus to the heart of the law: love God and love your neighbour. Eternal life is not earned, but received—and love flows from that gift.
2.“Who is my neighbour?” We often try to define or limit who qualifies as our neighbour—preferring those like us. But Jesus overturns that with a radical story: a despised Samaritan becomes the compassionate caregiver, unlike the religious leaders who passed by.
3. “Who became the neighbour of the injured man?” Jesus reframes the issue. It’s not about identifying neighbours—it’s about becoming one. The real challenge is: Are you willing to be a neighbour to those in need?
Therefore train our eyes to see the wounded around us—to go beyond our comfort zones and act with mercy, compassion, and responsibility.
