The Bread of Life
The day after Jesus miraculously fed five thousand men, many people eagerly sought Him, but their reasons were misguided. They were focused on their physical needs, which is understandable. However, Jesus explained that He came from heaven to offer eternal life, and they could receive this life by believing in Him. He said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty” (John 6.35).
Bread is a common food, accessible even to the poor. For people in first-century Palestine, bread was a staple food. It’s no surprise that after Jesus fed the crowd with bread, they followed Him to Capernaum, hoping for more. They remembered how God, through Moses, provided their ancestors with manna in the wilderness for forty years, and they wanted Jesus to feed them every day in a similar way. But Jesus can give more than they could imagine. He gives himself to us.
Physical bread satisfies hunger for a while, but eventually, you get hungry again. In contrast, the “Bread of Life” that Jesus offers provides eternal satisfaction. He is the bread that sustains us in every way. Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). May we nourish ourselves by the Bread of Life and experience this abundant life daily! God bless!
