In the gospels, Jesus encourages His followers not to fear because He is not only with them but also has authority over all things. “Do not fear” is a command to trust in God’s sovereignty and his provision.

Jesus says, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, fear the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell” Mathew 10:28. Jesus teaches His disciples about the potential persecution they might face for their faith and he tells them that physical harm should not be their greatest fear. He further says, “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all numbered” Mathew 10:29,30. Two sparrows for one penny probably bought in a deal: buy one and get one free. Jesus assures his disciples that even the free sparrow is not forgotten by the Lord. If God cares for and values even the smallest and seemingly insignificant creatures, how much more will He care for and value His human creation?

Therefore, fear the Lord. Fear of God means having a deep reverence and respect for him. It involves recognizing his holiness, acknowledging his authority, and living in obedience to his commandments. It is not about trembling in fear, but rather acknowledging his greatness and responding with awe and obedience. I pray we establish fear of God in us, not the fear of men. May the dear Lord help us!
