Advent, derived from the Latin word “Adventus,” meaning “arrival,” marks the anticipation of Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus over 2000 years ago. There are four Sundays in the Advent season and we reflect on four important themes: hope, peace, joy, and love.
The first Sunday of Advent encourages us to “stay awake,” focusing on living in the present and being mindful of the period between Jesus’ first and second comings. This invitation calls us to engage in the present, serving others, and staying alert, sustained by the hope we have in Jesus.
The second Sunday of Advent highlights the peace Jesus offers. The angel’s announcement to the shepherds proclaimed Jesus’ birth as bringing peace on earth—not the fleeting peace of the world, but a deeper peace that transcends understanding, offering a calmness in Him despite life’s difficulties.
On the third Sunday, we reflect on the joy in the Christmas story. The shepherds, filled with joy after witnessing the newborn Jesus, shared what they had heard and seen with all they met. Following Jesus brings true joy that transforms our lives.
The fourth Sunday of Advent focuses on love—the profound reason for Jesus’ coming. His life, suffering, and resurrection all demonstrate His deep, sacrificial love for humanity. Jesus’ love is unlike anything the world has ever seen.
As we enter this festive season, filled with holidays, travel, feasts, and gatherings, I pray that we do not allow the busyness to overshadow the true meaning of this season. May the dear Lord help us to enjoy His peace, experience the joy and love exhibited in Jesus, and stay awake in great hope!
God bless!
