Have you read your Bible today? What role does the Bible play in your life? The Bible is the Word of God, and it plays an important role in the life of every Christian. D.L. Moody once said, “I never saw a useful Christian who was not a student of the Bible.” In other words, it is impossible to find a mature Christian without knowledge of the Bible. Someone once said, “The Bible is a love letter from God to us.” Therefore, we are not reading just to acquire knowledge of the Scriptures but to understand God’s love toward us. James Merritt said, “The primary purpose of reading the Bible is not to know the Bible but to know God.” Another person noted, “The Bible is the only book whose author is present when you read it.” Therefore, reading the Bible should be an enjoyable experience.
Recently, we were speaking with a seafarer, and we asked him about the purpose of the Bible. He said, “It is the guide that takes us closer to God.” We then asked him if he had his Bible, but he said he did not. This reflects a common problem among Christians today. While 72 percent of Christians believe the Bible is the Word of God, only 12 percent read it daily.
One reason Christians do not read the Bible every day is because it confronts us. We live in a world that trivializes sin, but whether it is small or big, sin is sin, and it separates us from God. The biggest problem in the world is sin, and the Bible equips us to overcome the temptations it brings. That is why Moody further says, “The Bible will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from the Bible.” May the dear Lord help us to make reading and meditating on the Bible a part of our daily lives! God bless!
