Salt and Light

I marvel at Abraham’s prayer for Sodom and Gomorrah found in Genesis 18. Abraham is learning about who God is and how he acts through his prayer. His prayer is ‘Will you indeed sweep away the place (land) and not forgive it for sake of righteous people who live in it?’ He checked whether God would destroy the land if there were fifty righteous people living in it. He slowly brought down the number to ten righteous people. The LORD promised him that he would not destroy the land if he found ten righteous people in that place.

Jesus teaches us that we are the salt and light of the world. Salt is meant for purification and preservation while light is for guiding. Both are important elements which play significant roles to sustain life on this earth. Salt is used not in large quantities, nor do we require high energy light. However, if both lose their effectiveness, the impact is clearly visible. That was the case in Sodom and Gomorrah. Not even ten righteous people were found. God calls us to be his light bearers and preservers of his truth on this earth. This call of God cannot be ignored. May the dear Lord help us to be the salt of the earth and light of the world! God bless!

The church is called to be separate in lifestyle but never to be isolated from the people it seeks to influence. Salt, light, and leaven don’t work very well from a distance.
